Martine Époque

Le Groupe Nouvelle Aire in Montréal / Université du Québec à Montréal / LARTech

(1942- )

Martine Époque was born in France and immigrated to Canada in 1967. She was one of the co-founders and the artistic director (1968-1980) of the contemporary dance company Le Groupe Nouvelle Aire, which became the creative incubator for many of the most innovative choreographers in Montréal during the subsequent decades before closing in 1982.

Époque's early choreographic works, such as Amibo ïsme (1970) and De Profundis, (1970), were musically sophisticated and reflected her training in Dalcroze eurhythmics.

In the 1980s, Époque became one of the founding faculty members of the dance program at the Université du Québec à Montréal where she was instrumental in the creation of the Dance Department in 1985.

Époque's work and choreography during the 1990s have been largely defined by an interest in exploring the interface between the performing arts and technology. In 1999, along with her colleague Denis Poulin, she founded the LARTech, a university non-profit research centre. Using cutting-edge technology, they have created many multimedia performances; created a computerized dance notation system based on video and motion capture technology; and developed LIFEanimation, a computer dance animation program based on the Montréal company Digits'n Art's LIFEsource technology, which functions as a choreographic aid.

Époque is a member of the Institute for Research and Creation in Media Arts and Technologies Hexagram as well as the Centre interuniversitaire des arts médiatiques.

In recognition of her leadership and talent, Époque was the recipient of the 1983 Clifford E. Lee Choreographic Award as well as the Prix du Québec en arts d'interprétation Denise-Pelletier in 1994.
