Bruch's Scottish Fantasy is aptly named, for it is a free-form composition, improvisatory in tone, and incorporates several authentic Scottish folksongs that evoke ruined castles, bards strumming their harps, bagpipes and native dances. The role of the solo violin essentially makes this a concerto in all but name.
