Canadian composer Peter Paul Koprowski wrote Epitaph for Strings in memory of a man who figured prominently in his life, Professor Woytowicz. It is written for a large string ensemble with a solo quartet. “The prevailing mood of sadness is interrupted by an abrupt ending,” he writes, “ which calls to mind the sudden news of the death of Professor Woytowicz.”

This 25-minute work in four movements was originally meant to be a violin concerto, but instead it developed into a sort of concerto for orchestra. Featured ensembles include string trio, string quartet and string quintet; solo instruments include violin, flute, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet and percussion.
