Nobilissima Visione began life as a ballet score under the name St. Francis, which recounts in stylized dance action the mystical experiences of St. Francis of Assisi. From the complete work Hindemith drew five excerpts and wove them into a 23-minute suite that glows with spirituality and religious fervor.

This may well be Hindemith’s most frequently played work, full of catchy tunes, sturdy rhythms and colorful orchestration. The thematic material Hindemith “metamorphoses” comes from obscure sources, but what he does with it is endlessly fascinating.

Here, the early twentieth-century German composer Paul Hindemith depicts in sound three scenes created by the painter Mathis Grünewald, whose brilliantly colorful altarpiece for Isenheim is one of the great glories of Renaissance art.
