Chansons de jadis (Songs of Long Ago) is a thirty-minute cycle of six poems from various lands set to music with exquisite attention to detail and emotional intensity. In keeping with the work’s title (and subtitle as well), there is a yearning, bittersweet quality to this music, which is drenched in the searing intensity and hyper-romanticism of early twentieth-century composers like Mahler, Berg and Zemlinsky.
