Performance date: February 14, 1984
Date composed: 1952
This ten-minute movement from the composer’s string quartet of 1938 provides a powerful emotional experience as its densely woven lines interact in a premonition of the tragedy that was to overwhelm Europe. The composer herself arranged the music for full string orchestra, with the notable addition of parts for double basses, which add an extra layer of depth and richness when they at times double the cello line an octave lower.
