Elgar, Sir Edward
Introduction & Allegro, Op. 47Composer: Elgar, Sir Edward
Performance date: October 03, 1972

Date composed: 1905

Don’t be deceived by the title – there’s much more to this work than an “introduction” and an allegro. There are literally dozens of changes of tempo, a great variety of string techniques (pizzicato, ponticello, double and triple stops, tremolo, muted passages and more) and the concerto grosso principle of a small group of instruments ( a solo string quartet) competing for attention with the large, massed string section.

Elgar, Sir Edward
Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 61Composer: Elgar, Sir Edward
Performance date: May 15, 2002

Date composed: 1910

This magnificent work, one of the greatest violin concertos of the twentieth century, shows Elgar at the very height of his powers. In musical thought and emotional depth, it is often spoken of in the same breath as Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, composed exactly a century earlier.
